A Welcome to the Stelle Community Association
From the SCA Board
Stelle (Latin: ‘Star‘) is a small rural community formed in 1982 and located in NE Illinois, 80-miles south of Chicago and 60-miles north of Champaign/Urbana.
Many of us in Stelle have found what we consider to be a very high quality of life and not because of our specific location or the structures and layout of our community (which we find to be lovely). What we have come to learn is that ‘quality of life’ seems to be experienced in direct proportion to the energy each of us is willing to invest to serve others for the greater and common good.
Emily grew up in Stelle and recently married Mitch whom she went to school with. They now live in a neighboring town. It’s nice to have them close by.
Yes, we are a homeowner’s association (HOA) but there are very few covenants/restrictions in place here. We’ve heard the HOA nightmares and wish not to create a sterile environment. We welcome alternative building styles if done well and within county code, rainwater harvesting techniques, and creative foodscaping yards rather than just grass, though just grass is fine too. Many of us enjoy a wonderful community experience here because we are co-creating it with our neighbors by participating in various activities and serving when and where we can, mostly in small ways.
The best part about Stelle is that each one of us decides how much community we wish to experience. No one is forced to participate here and some do keep to themselves and enjoy their privacy. But the opportunities to connect and get involved with neighbors, who often end up becoming lifelong friends, are many.
As a board, we host our open, monthly meetings in the community center and also keep a Zoom line open to any resident who would like to listen in instead. We have found this to be an effective way to get our business done while making it convenient for residents to participate and give input. In good weather we might host the meeting outside in our community center courtyard.
